This Firefighter Boot Camp blog is very special to me and I thought I had posted it months ago for my friend Sharon after she wrote it….but somehow it became lost in the black hole that I call “gmail” 😉 I had myself been praying for answers regarding a crossroads I was at in my own life and finally when I felt like I had been given the peace from God to make a decision…I did it. I was fearful though so yesterday afternoon, I asked God to give me signs that I was in His will and on the path He desired for me to be on. I received that sign from a friend of mine last night and then I found this blog that I hadn’t posted yet. As I reread it, I was reminded that our will is never as important as the will He has for us.
Firefighter Boot Camp
I have been in my share of abusive relationships in my lifetime. I never felt like I was worth being happy, so I stayed and I also feared raising 3 kids on my own. In 2012 my two oldest kids were off on there own, so I signed up for a local cardio kickboxing class to do something for myself. Those 2 nights a week became my favorite nights. There was nobody yelling at me, degrading me, it was me taking out my aggression and finding my worth. I would get home and tell my husband how much fun it was. I told him I wanted to help other people get healthy. He just laughed at me. I would log onto Facebook and go to the Train Dirty Fitness page to see Crystal’s supportive posts for the day and to have somebody tell me that I was #goodenough. Finally in May of 2013 I had my plan set to leave my husband and create my new life with my daughter. June 15,2013 was moving day. A friend was nice enough to rent me an apartment on his property and became a source of support for us. I worked multiple jobs to support myself and my daughter and still be able to set money aside. I was on the nursing staff of a doctor’s office full time and bartended at a few different places. I wanted to set the money aside so that I could become a TDF Boot Camp instructor. By January of 2014 I had saved enough money to get my personal training certification and I signed up for TDF Boot Camp and HIIT It certifications that were being taught by Dana Roxas in Philly. I had no plans past getting those certifications. I was lost, so I signed up for Crystal’s Bombshell program. I used the tools I learned to promote myself and started a small TDF Boot Camp group and taught them in my backyard every Wednesday and Saturday. While working in the doctor’s office one day in October of 2013 a patient of ours, Todd Soura, owner of Action Personal Training, came into the office and we were discussing fitness and boot camps. He asked if I would be interested filling in teaching a few boot camps for him. He is a big deal to me. He has locations in 4 states and is very knowledgeable. Of course I jumped at the chance! What I did not know at that moment was that I would be training firefighters!! How was little ole me going to train firefighters?!?! I played like it was no big deal and went home and planned out a boot camp for them. It was not the TDF Boot Camp, but I figured a way to turn HIIT It into an hour long class that would not kill anyone. Almost 50% of on duty firefighter deaths are caused my cardiac problems, so I knew I had to do strength and cardio… HIIT It! After I had been working with this crew for about 5 months, I told them about a group of women that I train in their area in the mornings. They asked what made their workouts different? I explained to them that the TDF Boot Camp is partly choreographed to music and I didn’t think they could do it… (Reverse psychology) Of course, they HAD to do it. The next class we did TDF Boot Camp. They all looked a little ragged 12 minutes into the class, but continued on with less complaining as usual. (They do complain a lot, but I love them). At the end, a few were left tired and on the ground, and not many words were spoken. I thought, at the time, that I may have killed them. Two days later we did our usual interval training and at the end of this type of class, we do a 10 minute segment called “You call it” where each member calls the exercise for the group to do. The first person I called on, a firefighter named Dave, yelled out, “The exercise with the weight to the song Fancy (Iggy, not Reba. I couldn’t start them with Reba…lol) the other day! That is when I knew that even as hard as that class was for them, they loved it! I love having the different class options that I can keep them going and not get bored. I got TDF Kick certified in April of this year, at the request of members who wanted to learn kickboxing. We have yet to do a full TDF Kick class, but little by little the moves are added in for them.I went from an abused soul to having the fullest, happiest heart. I am a survivor and a positive role model for my kids and grandkids. TDF and Crystal Honeycutt helped me find myself and find my voice. I now work part time on the nursing staff in a pain management office, I train my own clients still from that little group in my back yard, I teach Action Boot Camp for a Township 3 mornings a week, and I teach 2 fire departments. My life has changed drastically and I could not be happier! These people have become more than clients, they are my family. I am #goodenough and #itrainheroes
Thank you Crystal!!!Much love and many Blessings,Sharon Virgilio, CPT
