I love network marketing, networking in general, small businesses, supporting small businesses, and pretty much any business that is going to help another woman succeed in life. I’m not that girl who hates on this company or that company. I don’t bash companies on Facebook that are different or similar to mine. If it makes you an income to support your family without being illegal? Then go on with your bad self, you have my support! I have been in network marketing (MLMs) since I was 19 years old and now that I am closer to 40 than 30, that should give you an idea of how many years it’s been 😉
Over the years, I’ve seen many networking tactics by leaders that made my skin crawl. The truly icky feels come though, when I see leaders push these tactics on the brand new promoter/distributor/coach (whatever you call yourself), telling her this is the way to success.
Sigh…no, these are the social media tips that will kill your new business.
Sweet friend, I want you to succeed. I want you to have massive online success and I want you to rise to the top rankings in your company. I want that for you enough to give you these free social media tips to avoid but also not only HOW to fix the mistakes but WHY they don’t work. I love you that much 😉
Killer Mistake #1
Invite me to dinner, don’t show up on my doorstep with a casserole and ask me where you sit at my table.
Avoid: Add all your friends blindly to a private Facebook sales group. I’m not sure honestly which company started this trend but a couple of years ago, it started to get out of hand. If you want to cause your friends to running screaming in the other direction, add them without asking to your private Facebook group.
Fix: Simply email your friend and ask permission to add them to your private group or post a Facebook status asking who wants to join. It’s just simple manners. There is NOTHING wrong with a private Facebook group for you to market & sell your product. I have those too! If done the correct way, they are very beneficial to your business plus it keeps you in closer contact with your customer.
KILLER MISTAKE #2
I’m not a film director, so don’t give me your script.
Avoid: Scripts are a fast way to email suicide. Want your emails/messages deleted within 2 seconds? Send out a script, a generic email to everyone, a one size fits all message.
Fix: Do you know your friends? Talk to them like you do in real life. Ask how their week is going, how is work, how is their child, or anything personal that pertains to THAT friend, not the masses. They may be interested in your product, if you show interest in them, as a person not a dollar sign. Engage with people, find out what their needs are, then if you have a solution, offer it. Toss the script unless you are headed out to Hollywood.
Killer Mistake #3
Don’t product overload me. I still want to see your children’s birthday parties, what you had for lunch, and your selfies too.
Avoid: Your friends will unfollow or even worse unfriend you if all of your posts are about your product, you using your product, what your product has done for you, what your product has done for others, what your product is supposed to do, or any other constant product posts. Follow the 80/20 rule, 80% real life and 20% product.
Fix: Remember what it’s like to post on Facebook for fun? Or gasp…even post a silly photo of you and your kids? That’s what your friends want the most of! They became your friend because of you, not the product you sell. Make sure 8 out of 10 posts are your authentic self and not product related. Doing this will keep you in their newsfeeds 😉
Killer Mistake #4
Don’t stop learning just because you are making money, education is crucial to long term success.
Avoid: Never assume you can’t learn from someone else, even the brand new distributor. We should always learning! The truly successful woman knows, she is always under construction. We should never think we are the smartest in the room or that we can’t learn from another.
Fix: Grow each day, improve your skills, and never stop striving to be better. Do personal development regularly and be open to hear suggestions from those who have lesser “years experience” than you. It doesn’t mean they don’t have great ideas!
